The English golfer Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
Aaron Rai displayed exceptional nerve to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, beating his compatriot in a dramatic play-off following a rollercoaster last day of play.
The Englishman nailed a decisive birdie putt from just over eight feet to seal the win, echoing his only previous tournament success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a play-off victory against Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Drama
Rai started the final round with a single stroke lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, five-under closing round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.
Fleetwood edged one shot clear with two holes to play after a birdie on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a 10-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the final hole.
Playoff Decider
That set up a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to take the title and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even better person. To play with him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” stated Rai, the present world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on your game and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to put into words at the present how it is. It is amazing to be stood here.”
Notable Contenders
The Northern Irish star found himself just too much to do, finishing one shot behind in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 62 final round of 62. It was McIlroy’s best-ever score on the European Tour, including eight birdies and an eagle.
The Danish golfer carded six birdies of his own, but his hopes of leading the standings were dented by a bogey on the twelfth. English golfer Mansell hit an excellent last round seven-under to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
