Pacific Bluefin Fish Fetches Record Bid of $3.2m at Tokyo New Year Sale
A massive bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the year.
The winning offer for the 243kg fish was submitted by the operator of a well-known sushi chain, which operates outlets across the country and internationally.
"An inaugural tuna signals a prosperous start," stated the business owner, a familiar figure at the traditional January sale.
Dubbed the Tuna King, this entrepreneur is famous for placing record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile new year auctions.
Auction Shock and Record-Setting Past
Following the auction, the successful bidder informed journalists that he was "surprised at the final price," stating, "I believed we would be able to acquire it a little for less, but the price escalated rapidly."
This new purchase exceeds his previous notable purchases:
- He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen a year later.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).
Even after once commenting that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to shatter his personal record another time.
A Tradition of High Prices
The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously associated with sky-high prices. Last year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by another culinary group, which indicated the fish would be available at its eateries across Japan.
The frenetic energy at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a must-see event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
Immediate Consumption
The extremely valuable tuna was promptly sliced up for patrons at the entrepreneur's sushi chains immediately after the auction ended.
"I feel like I've begun the year in a positive way after eating something so lucky as the year begins," shared one happy patron.
