Milei Statuette, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause

Getting rid of unneeded offerings could be viewed as somewhat rude – unless it's done in the proper manner.

A Charitable Sale

The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, will offload an estimated 270 gifts given to her by foreign dignitaries while abroad. This unusual assortment is said to contain objects like a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.

The collection, together, have an approximate value of €800,000. They will be auctioned off to the highest bidder by a Rome-based auction firm. A date has not been finalized, but the aim is to conduct the sale by year's end, with the revenue donated to a selection of charitable causes.

Storage Room Collection

The presents are currently stored in a secure area on the third floor of the prime minister's official office. Reports indicate that Meloni is also considering auction off gifts received by her political forerunners that have been gathering dust over a long period.

The full gift list remains disclosed, but some insight emerged earlier this year when a comprehensive document of all declared gifts was presented in parliament. The question raised if a legal value limit was being followed. Legally, a prime minister cannot take home presents valued above €300.

A Global Array of Presents

Among the items:

  • A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
  • A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
  • A electronic pad from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Artworks from the Moldovan government.
  • Various other items including makeup, a board, and several rugs received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the strangest gifts included the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," reports suggest.

Political Context

Supporters have applauded Meloni, mostly from within her party, with garnering support from global statesmen and positioning Italy as a prominent force on the world stage once again.

This charitable initiative highlights a distinct method to handle the protocol gifts that are collected during a political career.
